Ripped!

Sun Feb 19, 2006, 9:45 AM
Hey, got my stuff ripped for the first time here on deviantart! Ok, this had to happen. Anyway, I just will start watermarking my stuff, and that should pretty much solve it. Feels kinda weird, but I'm not angry... But people can be really stupid thinking they can post stff without anyone noticing! ;)

Edit: it seems deviantart has taken down the drawing. Thank you! It really was not serious. I think this person just thought deviantart was the appropriate place to post other people's drawings, just ot share them to other (this person never said that he had done the drawing, he just said he liked the character in the pic...)

Héhé, ça prouve que tu as du talent ;)

Sérieusement, je me demande ce que les gens qui font ça ont dans la tête. Quel intérêt de récolter un succès qu'on ne mérite pas? Non mais vraiment...

Kyla, you stand out on dA as someone of exeptional poise and grace. Other dA artists might have taken offense and blasted the offender, where you acted with kindness and gave her the benefit of the doubt. You are one of a kind, Kyla. You set a shining example for the rest of us.

thank you! :blushes: I don't know how I would have reacted if someone had stolen my art to sell it, though! XD Anyway, I hate conflicts... Sometimes, in conflicted situations, I can be a real coward... And sometimes, I try to solve things with a good talk. I'm really a non violent person. The only times I get really really angry, is when I can't draw. Then, sometimes, I end up throwing the sketchbook accross the room! But I rarely get angry at people, frankly. But I can swear I'm no angel! though I try my best to be honest. "don't do to others what you don't want others to do to you" and "do to others what you want others to do to you" that's always what I say to myself.
But those were some very nice things to say, really! :)

So few people conduct themselves properly, that when I see someone who does, I always try to commend them for it. You try to abide by the "Golden Rule", and you are a better person for it.

Wow...that sucks! Well, that tells me I need to start watermarking my stuff too. ...Hmmm, not like anyone really wants to steal my stuff though. :D Ha! Seriously though, I think you handled the situation pretty well. Thanks for the heads up, K! :handshake:

I admire the way you're handling this. I've seen quite a few Makani ripoffs out there (I can spot them a mile away) and if it were me, I'd be out for blood... sounds like watermarking might not be a bad idea. At least they're not selling it for profit, right?

yup, indeed! frankly it could have been much worse... I was quite lucky with this one... I think this person didn't realise deviantart was not a site for posting other people's art (like on other blogs, where you can share art of others with people), it would heve been stupid for him to get banned if it only was a mistake. I once saw a girl who posted stuff on deviantart who wasn't hers, but said "look at this drawing, I find it very cool, hope you'll enjoy it too!" and never claiming it was her own... that's not real thievery, I think. And this is exactly what I think happened to me today.

It's actually sort of a compliment as long as they don't make any money off it. So, um, 'grats? Or should I grab my pitchfork and go to war for my friend Kyla here? ;)

I've seen too many people getting stupidly banned simply because this kind of stuff caused so much drama... I don't want for people to go and insult this person, flame her and stuff... It's useless, especially if it was, as I think, a mistake. This person probably didn't know deviantart was not a place to post other people's art. It's like this girl, who posted screenshotsof her favourite anime, and just said "I find this really neat, what do you think" without claiming it her own. I think this is what happened to me...

Have you talked to her personally? I think this is a great opportunity to show someone the right way. You can show her what to do and what not to do. And from there, maybe a friendship will form.

Kyla, you're a girl after my own heart. Seriously, it's refreshing to read about how you've chosen to be civil with this girl. Don't let her get away with it though. Reporting someone doesn't automatically give them a bad record, it just gives us the chance to explain to them the rules around here. It's only when they've crossed a certain line or repeated the thefts (or other offenses) over and over again it becomes a problem.

 I'm glad you found this out before it got too out of hand.

I totally agree with you. For what I saw, everything makes me think that she has probably confused deviantart with other blog sites, where it's ok to post stuff that isn't your own, if you see what I mean (like posting a fanart drawing of a character you like etc, just for the pleasure of sharing a nice rendition of that character). I noted her, and am waiting for an answer. But frankly, it's not worth getting angry for. I was more surprised than anything else, really! It's not either like someone was taking my drawings, printing them on t-shirts, and sold on ebay!

Thank you for your kind words!

Dang, that stinks. Eh... I've had it happen to my friends before, though. There was this whole big issue and I ended up getting temporarilly-banned twice for telling the theif that they stole a pic. Oo; And someone else got permanently-banned. And then the dA admins ended up defending the theif, which I thought was really weird.

Oh well. At least you're handling the situation maturely. XD

Oh, and how do you watermark a pic? I'm paranoid about my pics being stolen and such...

I think, for the watermark, you just simply put a symbol or something that is totally your own, and stick it over your drawing. Or for traditional artists, just sign in the drawing directly, not on the white of the paper, where it can easily be erased with the appropriate computer programm...
I didn't want to say her name, because she probably confused DA with any other blog, where you can show drawings you didn't do to share with other people. I told her it would be stupid to get banned if that were the case, so I didn't report her. And I don't want people to go and insult her, and as a result, make her miserable but she eventually will be banned, and other people with her (I have witnessed many times people getting banned whislt their art was stolen. It happened to samantharobinson not that long ago...)

Ah, mur'kay, thanks. :D

And I suppose that makes sense. I looked at the pic you showed on another reply, and yeah, it didn't really look like she was trying to steal the pic or anything, I guess. Though the theif I was referring to actually took one of my friends pics and traced it, and entered it into a contest. >>;

Oh no, I don't want people going and attack her... She did take a drawing out of my gallery, but I think she confused deviantart with one other ordinary blog (where you can post drawings done by others to share them with your friends, if you see what I mean) so I told her it would be stupid for her to get banned if this was all it was, a mistake...

God, watermarking all your deviations must take forever! I mean, the act of watermarking doesn't take that long, but for every one of your deviations, you must find every one on your desktop in order to do it! :( I hope this doesn't happen to me!
